American Mathematical Society, Committee on Education. The Committee on Education is charged, among other things, to: serve as the Society's channel for communication with other organizations on matters concerning education; provide a forum for the discussion of mathematics education issues facing the U.S.A. including general mathematics education for K-12, undergraduate and graduate mathematics education and the recruitment of young people and underrepresented groups into the profession; recommend to the Society, and to the research community, actions which will make positive contributions to improving mathematics education.

Centre for Mathematics Education, The Open University, Milton Keynes, U.K. Mission is to support teachers involved with mathematics at all levels from kindergarten to tertiary.

EXTEND. Expectations of Mathematics Education.

EXTEND is a national Internet forum on mathematics education intended to involve new constituencies, to engage new voices, and to examine new perspectives.

Major topics will be explored through forum reports, position papers, and reader commentary: These topics are addressed from many perspectives, including those of educators and employers, business leaders and public officials.

In addition, EXTEND provides information on innovative programs and links to important documents related to reform of mathematics education in schools, colleges, and universities.

Access. Providing access to higher mathematics for all students amidst continuing public debate about the wisdom of tracking and the role of federal, state, and local policy in enabling reform.

Expectations. Society's conflicting expectations for the goals (ends) and pedagogy (means) of school mathematics. Concerns about the relation of skills to understanding, about connections with other disciplines, and about preparation for employment.

Articulation. Creating smoother transitions between education and work, between school and college, and within sectors of higher education. Preparing teachers to facilitate these transitions and students to respond to new environments.

Integration. Opportunities and impediments for connecting mathematics with other areas of school, including integration with career and vocational academies as well as interdiscplinary projects with other subjects.

Numeracy. Diverse views on the quantitative demands of today's society and the relation of quantitative literacy to mathematics education.

Freudenthal Institute, The Netherlands The Freudenthal Institute is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Center for Science and Mathematics Education at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The institute is working in the areas of research, education, (in)service teacher training and societal service for primary and secondary education. The staff consists of mathematicians, physicists, psychologists, teachers, teacher trainers and educators working together in an interdisciplinary approach from outside who collaborate with the FI.

The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction. Established at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rome in 1908 on the suggestion of David Eugene Smith. The first President of ICMI was Felix Klein and the first Secretary General was Henri Fehr. L'Enseignement Mathématique, founded by Henri Fehr in 1899, is the official organ of ICMI. In 1952 ICMI was reconstituted as a Commission of the International Mathematical Union. Recently ICMI has found it important to de involved directly in identifying issues or topics of particular contemporary significance to mathematics education and to invest effort in mounting specific studies on these themes.

International Directory of Mathematics Educators. The international directory consists of individuals currently working in mathematics education. It includes details of all individuals who supplied address information up to 1st June 2001. The list may be browsed by country or in full.

The goal of the Mathematics Archives is to provide organized Internet access to a wide variety of mathematical resources. The primary emphasis is on materials which are used in the teaching of mathematics. Currently the Archives is particularly strong in its collection of educational software. Other areas, ranging from laboratory notebooks and problem sets to lecture notes and reports on innovative methods, are growing. A second strength of the Archives is its extensive collection of links to other sites that are of interest to mathematicians. Resources available through these links include electronic journals, preprint services, grant information, and publishers of mathematical software, texts, and journals. These educational resources and the organized collection of links combine to make the Mathematics Archives a comprehensive site for mathematics on the Internet.
