Opportunities for Masters level study in Mathematics Education

Opportunities at the University of Southampton for Masters-level study in mathematics education occur within the following Masters level programmes:

These courses address the professional concerns of mathematics educators by introducing the range of ideas and frameworks in mathematics education developed around the world. The courses examine current issues as well as the ways in which long-standing debates have evolved, and permit course members to focus on:

Details of the courses are below.

MSc in Mathematics Education
The MSc in Mathematics Education consists of six taught units - two compulsory ('core') units and four 'electives' - plus a dissertation. The core units are:

For both of these core units, a 4,000-word assignment is completed, each of which must focus on an issue in mathematics education.

Electives include:

plus usually:

As with the 'core' units, a 4,000-word assignment is completed for each elective, wherever appropriate focusing on an issue in mathematics education.

For those taking the Masters course full-time, it is sometimes possible to substitute one of the above with a unit of mathematics offered by the School of Mathematics. The availability of such units is subject to negotiation and this option may not be available in a particular year.

To support progress to the dissertation, a series of Dissertation Studies sessions provides students with the opportunity to approach their research project and dissertation in a structured way. The sessions are designed to develop independent study skills and the production of a suitable plan for the independent dissertation project.

Note: Teachers with 60 M-level credits from a mathematics PGCE course need to complete three units plus the dissertation; this entails undertaking the two core units and one of ED6003, ED6236 or ED6273.

MA(Ed) in Institutional Management and Leadership in Mathematics Education
The MA(Ed) programme in Institutional Management and Leadership in Mathematics Education consists of six taught units - three compulsory ('core') units and three 'electives' - plus a dissertation. The core units are:

For each of these core units, a 4,000-word assignment is completed. Within each of these assignments it is possible to focus on an issue in mathematics education. For at least one of these units, the assignment must focus on an issue in mathematics education for an award in mathematics education.

The three electives are selected from a list of units available during the particular year of study. The following mathematics education units are usually available, although not necessarily within the same year of study:

As with the ‘core’ units, a 4,000-word assignment is completed for each elective units. For an award in mathematics education, the assignments for the elective units should, where appropriate, focus on an issue in mathematics education.

To support progress to the dissertation, a series of Dissertation Studies sessions provides students with the opportunity to approach their research project and dissertation in a structured way. The sessions are designed to develop independent study skills and the production of a suitable plan for the independent dissertation project.

Note: Teachers with 60 M-level credits from a mathematics PGCE course need to complete three units plus the dissertation; this entails undertaking the three core units .

MA(Ed) by flexible study
The MA(Ed) by flexible study is aimed at teachers and other professionals who have a clear idea of the area of study they with to pursue and for whom traditional patterns of course attendance are not possible. Participant complete three small projects prior to moving on to the dissertation stage. This work is supported by personally-tailored, flexible patterns of tutorial support. Where appropriate, this might mean working on a project being conducted by mathematics education staff.

Note: Teachers with 60 M-level credits from a PGCE course are likely to qualify for partial credit and, as such, complete perhaps two small projects prior to moving on to the dissertation stage.

Further details can be found in the course outline, please click here.

Patterns of Study
It is possible to study for the MSc, MA(Ed) IML or MA(Ed) by flexible study either full-time over one year, or part-time over two years (or more).

It is also possible to study for the MSc or MA(Ed) IML by the "unit route", completing the taught component of the course one unit at a time. Via this route, the Masters degree must be completed within five years. The MA(Ed) by flexible study must also be completed within five years, so study may be spread over that time period.

Financial Support
Local applicants: the School of Education is pleased to be able to offer a variety of subsidies for local students undertaking Masters courses; for details, click here.
EU/overseas applicants: information on a variety of sources of financial support can be found here, and here, and here.
